No LLC? No Problem

By Latecia Moore, Startup Consultant & Business Strategist

One of the most common misconceptions I hear from new entrepreneurs is: “I need an LLC before I can start making money.” That belief has stalled countless potential business owners—and let me be the first to tell you: it’s simply not true.

An LLC (Limited Liability Company) is a business structure, not a permission slip. You do not need it to validate your skills, land your first client, or start your side hustle. In fact, many successful entrepreneurs started as freelancers or sole proprietors, earning income and testing their ideas before formalizing their business.

If you’re in the idea stage, your focus should be on proving your concept and generating revenue. You can do that withoutjumping into legal paperwork and government fees. The LLC can—and should—come once your foundation is solid and your business model has traction.

Here’s how to start smart without an LLC:

  • Track your income and expenses using a simple spreadsheet or bookkeeping app. Treat it like a business from day one, even if it’s informal.
  • Use a basic service contract (plenty of free templates exist) to set boundaries and protect yourself.
  • Accept payments via PayPal, Cash App, Venmo, or Zelle to keep money moving while you build.
  • Register a DBA (Doing Business As) if needed in your state to operate under a business name while staying a sole proprietor.

When should you consider getting an LLC? When:

  • You’ve validated your idea and are making consistent income.
  • You’re ready to open a business bank account.
  • You want to protect your personal assets.
  • You’re hiring or expanding your operations.

Waiting to “get legal” before taking action can cost you valuable time, confidence, and momentum. As a consultant, I always say: build lean, launch light, and grow as you go.

Bottom Line: Don’t let legal logistics block your breakthrough. Get started, get experience, and the structure will follow. Your business journey doesn’t need to be official to be real.
